OPENING OF THE SESSION
1.The TEMPORARY CHAIRPERSON declared open the twenty-third session of the
Committee.
ELECTION OF THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE COMMITTEE (item 3 of the provisional agenda)
2.The TEMPORARY CHAIRPERSON announced that, as Mrs. Mboi had resigned from the Committee, consultations had been held with the members of the Committee and, as a result, Mrs. Ouedraogo had been elected as the new presiding officer of the Committee. Mrs. Ouedraogo would serve out Mrs. Mboi’s mandate as Chairperson, which was due to expire in January 2001.
3.Mrs. Ouedraogo took the Chair.
ADOPTION OF THE AGENDA (item 1 of the provisional agenda) (CRC/C/91)
4.The agenda was adopted.
FILLING OF CASUAL VACANCY AND SOLEMN DECLARATION BY THE NEW MEMBER OF THE COMMITTEE (agenda item 2)
5.The CHAIRPERSON said that Mrs. Rilantono had been designated by the Government of Indonesia to serve the remainder of Mrs. Mboi’s term as a member of the Committee. She invited Mrs. Rilantono to make the solemn declaration provided for in rule 15 of the provisional rules of procedure.
6.Mrs. RILANTONO made the following declaration: “I solemnly declare that I will perform my duties and exercise my powers as a member of the Committee on the Rights of the Child honourably, faithfully, impartially and conscientiously.”
SUBMISSION OF REPORTS BY STATES PARTIES (agenda item 5)
7.Mr. DAVID (Secretary of the Committee) said that, since the Committee’s previous session, initial reports had been received from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the United Republic of Tanzania, Qatar, the Gambia and Cape Verde. Burkina Faso and Poland had submitted periodic reports. To date, 141 initial reports and 31 periodic reports had been received, or a total of 172 reports, of which 110 had been considered. Fifty-three initial reports and 99 periodic reports were due and had not yet been submitted.
