Organizational matters

The Chair, giving an overview of the work completed during the session, said that the Committee had engaged in interactive dialogues and adopted concluding observations on the initial reports of Honduras, Nicaragua and Niger, and on the second periodic report of Sri Lanka, and had adopted lists of issues prior to reporting in respect of the third periodic reports of Ecuador and Mexico. The Committee had adopted a statement on children in situations of international migration and had endorsed the Recommended principles to guide actions concerning children on the move and other children affected by migration. Together with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN-Women) and the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, it had adopted a joint statement on women in the context of international migration.

In addition to its usual meetings with representatives of United Nations bodies and specialized agencies, civil society organizations and national institutions, the Committee had met with the Bureau of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in order to explore ways to strengthen cooperation, including through ensuring that questions posed by both Committees during interactive dialogues with States parties, as well as their recommendations and other outputs, took into account human rights issues relevant to both migrant workers and persons with disabilities. The Committee had also held meetings with the representatives of UN-Women, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and OHCHR, including the Migration Adviser and the Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants.

The Chair had briefed the Committee on his intersessional efforts to promote the ratification of the Convention, while Committee members, in turn, had provided briefings on their respective promotional activities. A successful meeting had been held with over 50 participants, including representatives of 31 permanent missions to the United Nations Office at Geneva, the Council of Europe, Caritas Internationalis, Terre des Hommes International Federation and the Global Detention Project, during which participants had discussed challenges relating to ratification of the Convention, reporting, promotional activities, treaty-body strengthening, general comments and cooperation with partners. Lastly, the Committee had discussed its working methods and had decided to dedicate time at its twenty-sixth session to strengthening them further.

Closure of the session

After the customary exchange of courtesies, the Chair declared the twenty-fifth session of the Committee closed.

The meeting rose at 4.20 p.m.
