ORGANIZATIONAL AND OTHER MATTERS (continued)

Guidelines for reports submitted by the States parties under article 9, paragraph 1, of the Convention (continued) (CERD/C/71/Misc.1)

Paragraph 19 (continued)

The CHAIRPERSON invited the Committee to resume its consideration of the draft revised guidelines for reporting on article 7 of the Convention.

With reference to section C, relating to information, he suggested the inclusion of the Internet in the list of mass media in paragraph 2. In paragraph 5, in the French text, the word “monter” should be replaced by the word “organiser”.

He took it that the Committee agreed to the wording of the draft revised guidelines for reporting on article 7 of the Convention, as amended.

It was so decided.

Paragraph 19 as a whole, as amended, was adopted.

Paragraphs 10 and 11 (continued)

The CHAIRPERSON recalled that during the 1836th meeting of the Committee, the discussion on paragraph 11 of the draft revised guidelines had been suspended. Following informal consultations, it had been agreed that the concerns expressed in connection with paragraph 11 could be met by redrafting paragraph 10. He invited the Committee to reopen its discussion on paragraph 10.

Mr. THORNBERRY proposed redrafting paragraph 10 to read: “The ethnic characteristics of the population, including those living in conditions of separation and those resulting from a hybridization of cultures, are of particular importance in connection with the Convention.”

Mr. SICILIANOS expressed concern about the use of the term “hybridization”, which had negative connotations, and therefore suggested that it should be replaced by “mixing”.

Ms. DAH asked what was meant by the words “conditions of separation”.

Mr. LINDGREN ALVES said that he had requested the inclusion of “conditions of separation” to meet concerns about indigenous peoples. He would not object to the deletion of that part of the paragraph, since his primary concern was the inclusion of “mixing of cultures”.

The CHAIRPERSON said he took it that the Committee agreed to delete the words “those living in conditions of separation and”, and to replace the word “hybridization” by “mixing”.

It was so agreed.

Paragraph 10, as amended, was adopted.

Paragraph 11, as amended, was adopted.

The draft revised guidelines for reports submitted by States parties under article 9, paragraph 1, of the Convention (CERD/C/71/Misc.1) as a whole, as amended, were adopted.

The public part of the meeting rose at 11.10 a.m.
