1.The twenty-second meeting of chairpersons of the human rights treaty bodies will be held on 1 and 2 July 2010, pursuant to General Assembly resolution 49/178 of 23 December 1994.

2.The present document contains the provisional agenda and annotations for the twenty-second meeting.

Provisional agenda

1.Opening of the meeting and election of officers.

2.Adoption of the agenda.

3.Organizational matters.

4.Enhancing the effectiveness of the treaty bodies: a coordinated approach to the work ofthe treaty bodies:

(a)Discussion of the recommendations of the tenthand eleventh inter-committeemeetings;

(b)Harmonization of working methods.

5.Mission to Brussels:

(a)Informal consultations with European Union institutions;

(b)Informal consultations with the diplomatic community;

(c)Informal consultations with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other Brussels-based actors.

6.Adoption of the report and setting of dates for the twenty-third meeting ofchairpersons.

Annotations

Item 1. Opening of the meeting and election of officers

The meeting will convene in Brussels on Thursday, 1July 2010, at 10 a.m. The meeting will confirm its Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson, who have acted in these capacities for the tenth inter-committee meeting.

Item 2. Adoption of the agenda

The meeting will adopt its agenda on the basis of the provisional agenda contained in thepresent document.

Item 3. Organizational matters

Under this agenda item, the meeting will consider and adopt a programme of work.

Item 4. Enhancing the effectiveness of the treaty bodies: a coordinated approach tothe work of the treaty bodies:

(a) Discussion of the recommendations of the tenth and eleventh intercommittee m eetings

Under this agenda item, participants will consider the recommendations contained in anadvance unedited version of the report of the tenth and eleventh inter-committee meetings,respectively held from 30 November to 2 December 2009 and from 28 to 30 June 2010;

(b) Harmonization of working methods

Under this agenda item, the participants will discuss the working methods of treatybodies, including coordination and possibilities for harmonization. The meeting will havebefore it the updated version of the report on the working methods of the human rightstreaty bodies (HRI/ICM/2010/2)

Item 5. Mission to Brussels

Participants to the twenty-second meeting of chairpersons of the human rights treaty bodies will travel to Brussels in order to interact with regional partners, with the main objectives of:

( a ) Informal consultations with European Union institutions;

Strengthening awareness among the European Union (EU) institutions, other regional institutions and member States, as well as other Brussels-based actors (diplomats, NGOs etc.) of the latest developments in the work of treaty bodies to increase efficiency and the applicability of the international human rights treaties in the EU;

( b ) Informal consultations with the diplomatic community;

Promoting action by the EU member States and the EU itself to ensure a stronger implementation of the concluding observations (recommendations) of treaty bodies inside the EU as useful tools to measure progress;

( c ) Informal consultations with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other Brussels-based actors.

Promoting of the international human rights treaties, the related work of treaty bodies, the follow-up to and implementation of their recommendations through the actions of the European Union.

Item 6. Adoption of the report and setting of dates for the twenty-third meeting ofchairpersons

The chairpersons will adopt a report on their meeting, including conclusions andrecommendations, to be submitted to the General Assembly at its sixty-fifth session, inaccordance with Assembly resolution 55/90 of 4 December 2000.

In addition, the chairpersons will determine the dates of their twenty-third meeting, tobe held in 2011.
