1.At the invitation of the Chairman, Mr. Vahidov (Uzbekistan) took a place at the Committee table.

2.Mr. CAMARA (Country Rapporteur) read out the Committee’s conclusions and recommendations on the initial report of Uzbekistan.

3.Mr. VAHIDOV (Uzbekistan), thanking the Committee, said that its recommendations would play a crucial role in the further development of Uzbekistan’s evolving human rights legislation. His delegation looked forward to continuing an active dialogue with the Committee and would communicate any information requested. Every effort would be made to ensure that the report due in October 2000 fully reflected the Committee’s recommendations particularly with regard to changes in legislation.

4.The delegation of Uzbekistan withdrew.

The public part of the meeting was suspended at 11.20 a.m. and resumed at 11.35 a.m.

5..After the customary exchange of courtesies, the CHAIRMAN declared the twenty-third session of the Committee against Torture closed
