Consideration of copies of petitions, copies of reports and other information relating to trust and non-self-governing territories and to all other territories to which General Assembly resolution 1514 (XV) applies, in conformity with article 15 of the Convention

Note by the Secretary-General

1.At its eighty-ninth session, the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination considered copies of reports and other documentation relating to trust and non-self-governing territories submitted to it in 2016 in accordance with decisions of the Trusteeship Council and the Special Committee on the Situation with regard to the Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, in conformity with article 15 of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. The Committee’s expressions of opinion and recommendations were submitted to the General Assembly at its seventy-first session in accordance with article 15 (3) of the Convention, as well as to the United Nations bodies concerned.

2.At its 2016 session, the Special Committee continued to follow the work of the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and to monitor related developments in the territories, having regard to the relevant provisions of article 15 of the Convention.

3.Any further action that the Special Committee may take in connection with the transmission of information to the Committee under article 15 of the Convention will be brought to the attention of the Committee at a later date, as appropriate.

4.In accordance with earlier decisions of the Special Committee and the Trusteeship Council, however, the Secretary-General will make available to the Committee, at its ninety-second session, copies of the working papers on the various territories, prepared by the secretariat for the Special Committee and the Trusteeship Council in 2016.

5.Accordingly, the Committee will have before it at its ninety-second session the following documents:

6.Working papers relating to other territories which may be prepared by the secretariat will be submitted to the Committee as they become available, as will copies of petitions, documents and decisions that the Special Committee may decide to transmit to the Committee under article 15 of the Convention.
