Organizational matters

1.The Chair, giving an overview of the Committee’s work at its thirtieth session, said that the Committee had welcomed the appointment of two new members, Mr. Charef and Mr. Soualem. Interactive dialogues had been held with Albania, Guatemala, Libya and Tajikistan. Lists of issues or lists of issues prior to reporting had been adopted in respect of Bolivia, Cabo Verde and Sao Tome and Principe.

2.The Committee had established a working group, coordinated by Mr. Botero Navarro and consisting of Ms. Dzumhur, Mr. Frasheri, Mr. Ünver and himself, on the interface between the Convention and the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. It had continued drafting a new general comment on migrants’ right to liberty and protection against arbitrary detention. Furthermore, the Committee had adopted its contribution to a treaty body oriented position in preparation for the 2020 review of the treaty body strengthening process and had discussed its communication strategy with the aim of enhancing its engagement with the media and raising the profile of its work. It had reviewed a follow-up report on the situation in Honduras and had updated its workplan for 2019. It had been briefed by Mr. Ibrahim Salama, Chief of the Human Rights Treaties Branch, on developments relevant to the Committee and by International Social Service on the launch of its Massive Open Online Course on children on the move. The Committee had adopted its annual report comprising the achievements of the twenty-ninth and thirtieth sessions.

3.In addition, the Committee had held meetings with member States of the Economic Community of West African States to discuss broader ratification and implementation of the Convention. The Committee had had a meaningful exchange with the Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants regarding further joint initiatives. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights had updated the Committee on, inter alia, the Global Compact for Migration, the United Nations Network on Migration and the Global Forum on Migration and Development.

4.The Committee, at the invitation of the Government of Azerbaijan, would be holding an informal brainstorming session and meetings with Government officials in Baku following the thirty-first session in September.

5.After the customary exchange of courtesies, the Chair declared the thirtieth session of the Committee closed.
