CONSIDERATION OF REPORTS SUBMITTED BY STATES PARTIES UNDER ARTICLE 19 OF THE CONVENTION (agenda item7) (continued)

Conclusions and recommendations concerning the third periodic report of the Czech Republic (continued) (CAT/C/60/Add.1; CAT/C/CR/32/2 (Future))

1.At the invitation of the Chairperson, Mr. Machoň (Czech Republic) took a place at the Committee table.

2.Mr. EL-MASRY (Country Rapporteur) read out the conclusions and recommendations of the Committee (CAT/C/CR/32/2 (Future)) on the third periodic report of the Czech Republic (CAT/C/60/Add.1).

3.The CHAIRPERSON said that the combined fourth and fifth periodic reports of the Czech Republic were due to be submitted to the Committee in 2009.

4.Mr. MACHOŇ (Czech Republic), thanking the Committee for their continuing dialogue with the Czech Republic, said that the Government would take into consideration all the Committee’s recommendations. The new anti-discrimination legislation currently under discussion was comprehensive and covered all the provisions of the International Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination. Measures would be taken to improve investigation into offences by members of the security forces and to decrease violence in detention facilities. He wished to emphasize that 180 days was not the average time taken to process asylum applications but was in fact the maximum detention period for alien detainees seeking asylum. Although detention institutions in the Czech Republic already had separate units for women and children, the Government would consider how to improve such facilities.

The meeting rose at 6 p.m.
