Election of members of the Committee

Election, in accordance with article 17 (4) and (5) of the Convention, of 12 members of the Committee to replace those whose terms are due to expire on 31 December 2018

Addendum

1.In accordance with the procedure set out in article 17 (3) of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, the Secretary-General, in a note verbale dated 19 December 2017, invited the States parties to the Convention to submit their nominations for the election of 12 members of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women by 7 March 2018. The details of the 15 nominees received by that date are contained in document CEDAW/SP/2018/2. One additional nomination has since been received, as follows: Akanti Aissah épse Ouro-Akondo (Togo).

2.The curriculum vitae of the additional candidate, as provided by her Government, is set out in the annex to the present note.

3.In a note dated 22 March 2018, the Permanent Mission of Malta to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva informed the secretariat of the decision of its Government to withdraw the nomination of Angela Abela as a candidate for election to the Committee.

Current position/function

Senior Administration Attaché and qualified social worker, expert in gender and development, specialist in gender-based violence. Twenty-nine years of professional experience in various positions, including the position of Director General of Gender and the Advancement of Women since 2015, and Project Leader of the component on gender and combating gender-based violence.

Main professional activities

•Proposing strategies for the implementation of the national policy for equity and gender equality

•Planning, coordinating, monitoring and assessing the evolution of policies and programmes on equity, gender equality and the advancement of women

•Drafting and implementing a national family policy

•Coordinating periodic studies and analyses to guide the actions of the Government and relevant partners in this area

•Preparing periodic reports on the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa and the Solemn Declaration on Gender Equality in Africa, among others

Educational background

•Conducted a study on female genital mutilation in Togo in 2006 to assess the impact of the Female Genital Mutilation Act, enacted in 1998, 10 years after the first study of 1996

•Conducted a study on gender-based violence in Togo in 2010 to assess the magnitude of the problem

Other main activities in the field relevant to the mandate of the Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women

Ensuring the implementation of the conventions, protocols, treaties and resolutions which Togo has signed and adhered to; leading the revision of the Persons and Family Code; leading the preparation of several national periodic reports on the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the Solemn Declaration on Gender Equality in Africa, among others; lobbying parliamentarians and traditional and religious leaders to promote gender equality; organizing national forums; preparing various documents on violence against women, such as an information and awareness-raising manual on violence against women and a training manual on psychological care for victims of gender-based violence; leading the development of the national policy on equity and gender equality.
