United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
1.On behalf of the Committee, the Secretariat invited the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), on 19 June 2002, to submit to the Committee a report on information provided by States to UNESCO on the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, in areas falling within the scope of its activities, which would supplement the information contained in the reports of the States parties to the Convention that will be considered at the exceptional session.
2.Other information sought by the Committee refers to activities, programmes and policy decisions undertaken by UNESCO to promote the implementation of the Convention.
3.The report annexed hereto has been submitted in compliance with the Committee’s request.

Activities under UNESCO’s programmes
. Women and culture of peace
UNESCO, through the Women and a Culture of Peace Programme (WCP) provided intellectual support and participated in the Forum of Women Artists of the Mediterranean for a Culture of Peace (Rhodes, Greece). This activity was held as part of the celebration of the International Year for the Culture of peace (2000), and was aimed at mobilizing partners for a culture of peace particularly among women's associations and organizations.
The WCP collaborated with the Greek NGO, KEGME and UN INSTRAW, and with the support of the European Commission, in a three-phased program on building bridges for “Women’s dialogue for the promotion of stability, human rights and peace in South East Europe”.
Training in conflict resolution was provided for Balkan women using the UNESCO/FAWE training module on “Promoting women ‘s participation in conflict resolution to build a culture of peace”.
The WCP also participated in a strategy meeting that recommended the establishment of a women's communications network and peace education training for the Balkans.
Funding was provided for the establishment of a women’s communications network (listserver) to promote Women’s Voices form the Balkans.

Activities under UNESCO's programmes
. The project Human Rights and Indigenous Peoples in Guatemala (1997-2000) touched upon human rights of women. Teaching aids in the form of “estudios Documentos” are produced, the aim of these publications is to reflect, analyse and document issues related to human rights and democracy, as well as to publish field studies.
One issue of “estudios y Documentos” (n° 17, 1999) focused entirely on human rights of women (CEDAW), including violence against women, the role of the state in protection human rights of women ... Issue n° 19 (1999) focused on women’s movements, including a Central American comparative study of women’s movements and women’s presence in politics and positions of power at the local level.
These study aids were published in 1000-1500 copies and according to the final evaluation they were distributed to 80 organizations (regional, departmental, international, IGOs, NGOs, National Ombudsman Institutions. These two particular issues were co-financed by Christian Aid. The project ended in 2000 with a final evaluation.
